Fly Kites Not Drones 2014

21-23 March Fly Kites in Solidarity with Afghans

Watch the short Fly Kites Not Drones video with Afghans talking about the tradition and fun of kite flying

The issue of drones has heightened in the last few weeks as Pakistani drone witness Kareem Khan was kidnapped and tortured -he was set to give evidence in the European Court, in addition a Yemani drones witness has also been harassed. Meanwhile British Courts threw out the case of Noor Khan due to fear of causing bad relations with the US, while new drone bases are set to open if not in Afghanistan then  elsewhere in Asia, in addition Britain co-operates directly with the US on launching drone strikes . Currently the cost to life by drone strikes is unknown due to the veil of secrecy.

We are encouraging concerned citizens, peace groups and those from the Muslim and Afghan community to fly kites in solidarity with Afghans who now have to live under the mental pressure and physical destruction which British and US drones now inflict upon Afghanistan, the "drone capital" of the world.

Drone warfare is set to continue, resist now to make our voices heard.

Kite flying will be taking place in Hastings, Blackheath, Kingston, Bristol, Lincoln, Oxford and many more places- hold an event in your area.

At Home with the Afghan Peace Volunteers

Peace Preserve

Last week 13 women and a baby gathered round a table in the snow for day 1 of a home jam, chutney and noodle making course. The APV are supporting the training of 25 women, the majority of whom are illiterate, to expand their skills base while also giving them the opportunity to earn a supplimenting income to support their families.

House of Flowers

The APV construct a basic greenhouse in their garden where they hope to grow vegetables and flowers. The A frame wooden greenhouse was covered with a plastic sheet to create an grwing conditions in time for spring.
National Strategising- to take peace into all the provinces- aided by Maya's souvenir carpet!

Female APV depart for India to learn Gandhian methods

Ahead of us is an exciting development for the Afghan Peace Volunteers.  Zarghuna, Topeki, Kathy Kelly, Maya Evans and Hakim will take a short exposure trip to India to two places where we will be learning from our Indian friends about how they organize themselves to do Gandhian types of action in a village setting.  They will visit the Barefoot College run by Bunker Roy.  And next they will participate in a “National Right to Food and Work conference” in through which we will be looking at ways to assure that people have sufficient food and work in all areas of a country.

Duvet Project 2014

Najeeba has four children, one son and three daughters aged 2-14. Sat in the pale sunlight of a cold January morning, she tells me that the duvets she will receive from the APV will be of vital help:

“This is a very good thing, there are a lot of poor people in this area”. We're in District Five, at the foot of a mountain, in the courtyard of a mosque filled with women in burkas waiting to collect their two puffy, warming duvets, made by women from backgrounds as impoverished as theirs. A cemetery of basic, barely marked graves on uneven ground is just beyond us, and in the distance, a stunningly beautiful blue domed mosque catches the light before giving way to hundreds of homes built into the rock of the mountain. It's a beautiful sight.
