Tree Planting In KabulDeforestation in AfghanistanIn 2015 the United Nations Environmental Program estimates that over the past three decades, Afghanistan’s forest cover has decreased by about 50%.In 2015 the United Nations Environmental Program estimates that over the past three decades, Afghanistan’s forest cover has decreased by about 50%.Years of war, drought and illegal timber smuggling are responsible.On the 1st and 2nd of April 2017, the Afghan Peace Volunteers planted 90 evergreen trees and 180 poplar trees in two government schools, including in a girls school compound that had no buildings, only open air and tent classrooms.

 Why are you, an Afghan tree sapling, going to school, when there really is no school, no teachers, no lessons even if there were teachers, no learning even if there were lessons?What economic value are you, since that’s the motivation injected into parents who send their children away from their war-driven poverty and joblessness to an education system that pretends to test a child’s abilities? Why give shade to the memorization of information that has no relevance to life nor questions to resist the nepotism or corruption of money?Why provide oxygen to war, only to be razed to the ground by its operators? The trees spoke powerfully without speaking, standing firm, taking root,“We are life, despite your deceptions, and your morbidities.”
